Confetti: Italians do it better!

La mia avventura da turista italiana in Italia continua e ieri è stata la volta di Martina Franca. Pubblicherò presto le foto di questa meravigliosa cittadina che si trova in provincia di Taranto, nella Valle d’Itria. Ma questo post sarà dedicato a un posticino che io, il mio ragazzo Gianvito e suo fratello Mario abbiamo scoperto girovagando nelle viuzze del centro storico di Martina Franca.
Io e la mia Canon veniamo sempre attratte da tutto ciò che è colore. E il mondo dei fiori è per noi una calamita. Se poi, in qualche modo, è collegato al mondo culinario, è fatta! Queste bellissime composizioni floreali fatte rigorosamente a mano sono i famosissimi confetti di Sulmona, comune in provincia dell’Aquila, in Abruzzo. L’idea è nata nel 2006 da Ernesto Belforte e dalla moglie Antonella.
Il confetto risalirebbe all’epoca dei romani e dell’imperatore Tiberio. La tradizione di regalarlo per le occasioni speciali sembra che abbia origine proprio dall’usanza dei romani di festeggiare la nascita di un figlio e per i matrimoni. Erano dei piccoli dolci che avevano come ingrediente una mandorla ricoperta di farina e miele. Dal XV secolo a quei dolcetti venne aggiunto lo zucchero e assunsero così la forma dei nostri attuali confetti. Sul sito internet della Confetteria di Sulmona che si trova in centro a Martina Franca, davanti alla basilica, ho trovato questa lista curiosissima delle occasioni speciali a ciascuna delle quali viene abbinato un colore.

My adventure as an Italian tourist in Italy continues and yesterday it was the turn of Martina Franca. I’ll post the photos I took in this wonderful town located in the province of Taranto, in the Itria Valley. This post will be dedicated to a place that my boyfriend Gianvito, his brother Mario and I found wandering in the narrow streets of the historic center of Martina Franca.
My Canon and I are always attracted to everything that is full of color and the world of flowers is a magnet for us. If it is somehow connected to the culinary world, this is it! These beautiful handmade bunches of flowers are the famous confetti of Sulmona, municipality of the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo.
The Confetteria di Sulmona was established in 2006 from an idea and intuition of Ernesto and Antonella Belforte.
Confetto is the Italian word for sugar-coated almond. This bonbon dates back to Roman times and the emperor Tiberius. Romans used it to celebrate the birth of a child and for weddings. They were small almonds covered with flour and honey. From the fifteenth century confetti had an extra ingredient, sugar, and they took the shape we all know nowadays.
In the website of Confectionery of Sulmona which is located in the center of Martina Franca, right in front of the church, I found this curious list of special occasions and their assigned color.
